Artisan Profile

Eva Gallagher – Newfoundout Pottery

I have been involved with pottery off and on for over 40 years. I use porcelain and stoneware clays and fire my pieces either in the Deep River Potters’ Guild electric and gas kilns or in my wood-fired kiln that I built on our “farm” in 2007 in “The Newfoundout”, an abandoned valley high in the Opeongo hills of Eastern Ontario and after which I named my pottery business.

I am primarly self taught, but a year long mentorship workshop with American potter Steven Hill in 2008 had a profound effect on my work. It changed not only how I look at my pots but what I am trying to achieve through my work.

I really enjoy the decorating process and use clay appliqué, carving and resist, often to tell a story, influenced either by issues that interest me or by our farm where the stone fences, old apple trees and steep slopes bring forth images of the past. And after decades of work, I feel that it is only now that maybe my pots are finally beginning to talk and sing to me – and truly satisfy me.
